https://southfloridagaynews.com/Local/best-of-2022-palm-beach.html

Rolando Barrero is the owner of the Box Gallery in West Palm Beach. He and his Gallery have been recognized as the Best Artist and Best Gallery of 2022. This is Berrero’s second year being selected as Best Artist. Best Gallery won in a reader’s choice category.

Of his artistry, Barrero said, “I try to create culturally relevant and thought-provoking work without compromise.” His latest piece, “The Family,” was recently installed as a public art piece at the Opportunity Early Childhood Education & Family Center in West Palm Beach.

“The Box Gallery will continue to maintain its reputation as a First Amendment space where all voices can be amplified through the arts,” Barrero said of his gallery. Barrero cultivates diverse styles of art and does not prioritize any one style over another.

“All art is welcome here,” he said.

2021
Rolando Chang Barrero has done a lot for Palm Beach County, so perhaps that’s why readers voted him as the Best LGBT Activist, Best Artist, and his art gallery in West Palm Beach won for Best Art Gallery.

Executive Director of Compass, Julie Seaver won this category so many times we decided to rename it LGBT Activist (NOT Named Julie Seaver), with her blessing!

Chang Barrero created the Pajaro Pride Wall Project, an auction that has over 100 artists, friends, allies, and community leaders creating art to sell.

“ I’m very honored to be included on this list among so many friends and associates,” Chang Barrero said. “It’s a great honor to be recognized by our community and I am very grateful. I’m very happy to be able to continue to serve my community.”

He has been creating art for over 40 years, according to his bio. He is a multimedia artist with a portfolio including fashion design, film, painting, acting, and more. His activism and his art are often intertwined, which is why the exhibits that his art gallery hosts feature topics that range from human rights to personal identity. Barrero has built a gallery in which it's easy to get lost, yet somehow find a piece of yourself along the way.

2019

For the second year in a row The Box Gallery has won Best Gallery in Palm Beach County. The Box Gallery has become one of the premier galleries in West Palm Beach, not to mention, it's only been established for three years.

Their exhibitions have proven to be informative, thought-provoking, and inspiring. Although Rolando Chang Barrero is an openly gay artist, he works tirelessly to make sure his gallery is all inclusive.

This past March gallery owner Rolando Chang Barrero contributed to Palm Beach Pride in a memorable way. He created panels in recognition of influential LGBT advocates in the community, like Melissa St.John and Andy Amoroso, just to name a few.

"Im very proud to lead the way for arts advocacy and community development," said Chang Barrero, gallery curator and owner.

"The gallery has become the place where to view and engage in deeper dialogue about trends and directions of the contemporary art scene. Our success has been due to our spirit of community embracing everyone from our furry friends and radical fairies to the academics and affluent.

The Box Gallery has won for Best Gallery. Anyone that has experienced the Box Gallery would agree that it is a smorgasbord of eccentric flavors. Two of the main ingredients that make The Box Gallery unique is its curation of the main exhibit and the fact that it changes every six weeks.

The other reason would be the actual curator/owner, Rolando Chang Barrero.

“It’s an honor and privilege to be recognized by my community and my peers,” said Barrerro, who founded the gallery in 2016. The content and the context of the exhibition are closely tied to the narratives, critiques, and cultural dialogues that are currently going on in the national and international art world with some exceptions - as in “trendy” works created for art fairs that sneak into the broader less academic conversation of what is seen as culturally relevant.

Although 2018 is almost over, Barrero already has plans for the new year.

“I am kicking off the year a little early on Dec. 29 with my 7th Annual Black and White Affair with a series of performances, artists talks, installations, and of course lots of Cuban music and food including a traditional roasted pig on Dec. 29.”

Rolando’s love for the art and his multifaceted approach and artistic activism puts him rightfully so with greats like Frida Khalo, Pablo Picasso, Kieth Haring, and Victor Manuel Garcia. Rolando embodies the true spirit of a Renaissance Man.

“Rolando truly cares about our Community and our under-served and under-privileged children,” mentions long time friend Lazaro "Laz" J. Mur, Esq. Founder, The Mur Law Firm, P.A. “He works very hard to bring Arts Education and Culture to everyone, not just the privileged few.”

2017

When it comes to art exhibitions, The Box Gallery thinks outside the box. “I program quite a bit and I program for the broader art community—by including a variety of art including music and dance,” said Curator Rolando Chang Barrero. “Our engagement level is higher than many other area galleries.”

The 4,000 square foot gallery is a vibrant, ever-changing space. Barrero said there’s never been a gallery like this in Palm Beach County.

“Being a private art gallery, we can push the envelope,” Barrero said. “I tend to show work that’s extremely marginal and at times risqué. We tend to spotlights artists who are part of the LGBT community – not simply because they are part of that community, but because of the merit of their work. We hold all artists to the same high standard.”
