The Silent Renaissance

West Palm Beach- The Box Gallery presents The Silent Renaissance :African American Millennial's Art a one day celebration of work by four outstanding visionaries in Palm Beach County. The Silent Renaissance : African American Millennial's Art opens with a reception on Saturday, November 18, 2018 at 7 pm.

Spotlighting the work of Ashlee Sanford, Kevin Lawson, Nixy Allison, and Chris Bivins. The four artists are leaving an indelible mark on the Palm Beach Art Scene through their contributions to our community.

Kevin Lawson's photographs taken while travelling through Europe will soon be part of a part of the first international travel guide for African Americans. Kevin's resolve to accomplish his goal included selling many personal possessions afford his initial trips throughout Europe.

Chris Bivins owner of Krish Kulah Photography is also a self started and entrepreneur who creates "beats" for musicians throughout the area and has recently launched a private photojournalism with garnered him a press pass without affiliation to any main stream news agency.
Artists and creatives Ashlee Sanford and Nixy Allison are concentrating on two distinct aspects of African American history esthetics and the impact of propaganda imagery .

The Silent Renaissance:
Much has changed since time period where African Americans gained their rise in status and found their place and role in American society. This is significant time, known as The Harlem Renaissance, marked a period in history where African Americans were able to identify their own accomplishments and the notable people within American society. Today the African American Millennials are leading the way in communities throughout our country and abroad.

A Silent Renaissance is now occurring among the young adults of the African American Millennial Generation.

The context of millennial, while defined by an increased use and familiarity with communications, media, and digital technologies is quite different for the African American Millennial at least in one particular area ; that of overeducated and underemployed. The African American Millennial has concentrated on entrepreneurship and solving the unemployment issues facing them.

When it comes to art exhibitions, The Box Gallery thinks outside the box. “I program quite a bit and I program for the broader art community—by including a variety of art including music and dance,” said Curator Rolando Chang Barrero. “Our engagement level is higher than many other area galleries.”
The 4,000 square foot gallery is a vibrant, ever-changing space. Barrero said there’s never been a gallery like this in Palm Beach County.
“Being a private art gallery, we can push the envelope,” Barrero said. “I tend to show work that’s extremely marginal and at times risqué. We tend to spotlights artists who are part of the LGBT community – not simply because they are part of that community, but because of the merit of their work. We hold all artists to the same high standard.”  — DR

This is something we feel is a tremendous answer to the immigration crisis,” Ak’Tenamit founder Steve Dudenhoefer said.
“No kid wants to choose between never seeing their family again but maybe getting a good education and eventually a job, if they can make it alive across the desert, or staying with their family locked in a life of poverty.”
