Curator and artist at The Box Gallery, Rolando Chang Barrero has been presenting works that
impact and address social ills for over 25 years.
With a moniker of ActivistArtistA has lived up to his goals in presenting some of the least popular issues in our country.
In May he has organized two powerhouse exhibitions focusing on Immigration, child abuse, homelessness and of course a little satirical jab at Donald Trump’s intimate relationship with Russia...

Adora:
‘Did you see ROLANDO BARRERO’s new show at THE BOX GALLERY up in WEST PALM? He’s presenting a performance by Venezuelan ACTIVIST  ARTIST MUU BLANCO. He’s  been arrested and even tortured by the Venezuelan Government.’ (https://www.evensi.us/black-point-box-gallery/299746961)

TeddyBehr:
‘Yeah, I saw that; Rolando’s been doing an amazing job up in Palm Beach. I remember when he opened his first gallery in  the warehouse area  in BOYNTON BEACH.and it became a catalyst for so many other artists to get a GALLERY WALK going up there.
Now he’s doing some things with artist-activism we’re not seeing here in Miami.’

Adora:
“Art can make a difference and get people to think….and even act. And now we’re seeing a lot more interest in ACTIVIST ART, that has a social or political point of view.  I remember when PUSSY RIOT started up in Russia… (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pussy_Riot)…they went to jail but drew a lot of attention to social and political repression.”

Teddy;
“ And there was a Russian performance artist who nailed his scrotum to the street in Red Square..pretty intense… Performance has been a way to express some pretty fierce things…for sure…’ (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/nov/11/artist-nails-testicles-red-square-pyotr-pavlensky),…Artists all over the world are protesting and incorporating their views into their art.”

Adora:
“Yikes!  I’m glad Muu Blanco didn’t t do anything like that, as bad as things are isn Venezuela…I know his Piece is called BLACK POINT and is about violence and bullet holes, and the situation in Venezuela right now…Rolando ’s really presenting some cutting edge art;. here’s the link to Muu Blanco’s performance at the gallery”: Video 1 KeroWACKED 2019 Fest

Teddy:
“Rolando is a BALL OF FIRE; After he started the BOYNTON BEACH ARTWALK, in a warehouse district there, back in 2012 and still going strong, he opened  THE BOX GALLERY in West Palm Beach a few years later. It’s 4000 sq.ft of gallery space. And of course he creates his own art too, Including The series of 8 LGBTQ heroes; portraits he did for the Palm Beach Pride fest earlier in April. Later this month he’s in a show at FAT VILLAGE ARTS DISTRICT in FT. LAUDERDALE called ’SNATCHED FROM THE HEADLINES’ about FloridaActivist Artists.”

Adora:
“ I love those portraits; very simple but with the rainbow colors for each portrait, but the portrait of him roaring like a lion is really amazing!  Rolando always had a lot of energy, but after he had the brain tumor and managed to really face the adversity confronting him full on, he’s become an amazingly focused and effective catalyst for art and action. As he says of that part of his life: ”In 1994 I was diagnosed with “brain cancer” and it wasn’t until 2009 that I returned to work after years of treatments and some of the most challenging and dark moments of my life.””

Teddy Behr:
“There’s that old saying about how what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, and Rolando’s really about the best example of that I know; he’s inspiring because he reminds me that only I can make the biggest difference in my own life…that even if I can’t change or fix everything, that I can still make a huge difference…for myself, and for people around me too.”

Adora:
“I love guys who are able to ‘Cojer el toro por los cuernos’ (’take the bull by the horns)…that’s as sexy as it gets!”
