"In l998, Matthew Shepard, a young, gay man was brutally beaten and tied to a fence by two young, heterosexual men. He was found, taken to a hospital, remained in a coma for several days, and then died. Nomi Silverman, in The Shepard Cycle, has given concrete form to the absurdity of this senseless murder. In her deep concern for humanity—a concern reflected in all her work—she has committed to allegorically and compellingly depict this abominable crime.

To approach this subject is hazardous; one must be sure-handed with media and persuasive in content. Silverman is both. She transcends stereotypes of social criticism, and ascends to the noble tradition of Bosch, Goya and most recently Golub. But Silverman's private protest is in her own handwriting. Of particular significance is her liberal use of the Stations of the Cross as the allegorical vehicle to depict her intensity of feeling. It is purely through artistic qualities and the
powerful grim realism of content that she creates these grotesque visions and makes The Shepard Cycle an unforgettable group of images. The entire suite is a condemnation of political and religious hypocrisies that emerged in response to the Shepard case, as well as to the general societal hypocrisies toward homosexuality. "

About
The Box Gallery initiates the first national alternative book fair in West Palm Beach. From coast to coast artists, authors, photographers, and cultural icons of the punk and queer culture come to celebrate the visions of the past and share their visions for the future.
From uptown to downtown, high brow to low brow, there will be a series of talks lectures, and presentations that span almost a half of century of documentation beginning from the early 70's to present.
